Fresh from winning Cape Town 12km Daniel Simiu Ebenyo and road race specialist Catherine Relin were the winners of the inaugural Nakuru City Half Marathon held today in Nakuru.
The Iten based runner won the race in 59:03 beating Godfrey Kipchumba to second in 59:42 before Felix Kibitok ended the podium.
Also from Iten Relin won the title in 67:29 for the title followed by Gladys Chepkurui (67.32) and Caroline Chebet (67.38) respectively.
Former Africa Youth 2,000m silver medalist Daisy Chepkemoi won the 10km women’s race in 32:25 ahead of Ludwina Chepng’eno, (32:33.09) and Faith Cherono (32:42.27).
In men’s 10km, Cornellius Kemboi won the title in 28:53 followed by Peter Meaniki (28:57.06) and Ronald Kipkorir came in third in 28:59.99.
He added that the county government of Nakuru has an elaborate program to ensure that junior athletes have their talents nurtured as well as education because no one should have to choose between pursuing their talent and education.
“Sometimes when you give them just the game and they cannot pursue their education, they end up dropping out of school, to avoid this, we have an academy that has an education component,” he said.
