Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel wanyonyi has set the 1,000m record after making his debut in the event during the Monaco Diamond League at the Meeting International d’Athlétisme Herculis in France.
In a sensational style, he clocked 2:11.83 to shutter then world record held by Kenyan Noah Ng’eny in a long standing time after taking off 0.13 seconds from 2:11.96.
Wanyonyi reached the finish in 2:11.83, Wightman followed him in 2:12.77 and Olympic medallist Djamel Sedjati was third in 2:13.94.
