Favourite Kenya lose to Zimbabwe in Africa Sevens in Tunisia

It was a disappointing moment as Shujaa, the national rugby sevens aside lost the Africa Sevens Cup title to Zimbabwe, failing to clinch their fifth title.

The Tunisia tournament was not good for out going Shujaa coach Innocent Namcos Simiyu whose side went 5-17 down to Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe was first on the scoreboard landing a center post try to take the 7 point lead with three minutes to the end of the first half.

Shujaa’s attacking pace saw them land their solitary try through Brian Wahinya with seconds to stoppage time. Taabu’s conversion attempt was unsuccessful in favour of the Cheetahs.

Kumadiro would dash for the try line right from kick off extending his side’s lead to 12-5 as the conversion went wide as Shujaa had not lost any match throughout the tournament  and had only conceded Two tries until this final.

In the semifinal match, Shujaa defeated Madagascar 36-05 to match to the final. Leonard Mugaisi was first on the scoreboard as he went over the whitewash twice in a row with Taabu converting the second try. Shujaa led 12-0 four minutes in the match.

New comer Eliakim Kichoi made another try for Shujaa before Wahinya and Wanjala set up Keyoga to land the fourth try with Taabu converting successfully.

After break, Mugaisi landed his third try while Bunyasi scored his maiden try with Wahinya converting Bunyasi’s try. Madagascar would score in the last minute, conversion sailing wide for the full time score to read 36-5.

At the quarter final, Kenya bagged their third win after trouncing Zambia 33-7. Cyprian Kuto and Taabu landed a try each in the first half with Taabu managing to boot in one conversion successfully.

Wanjala and Herman Humwa set up Mugaisi to score Shujaa’s third try, Taabu sure with his boot added the twos. Shujaa now led 19-0. Zambia would immediately respond as Martin Chisanga went over the whitewash narrowing the gap to 19-7 after a successful conversion.

Kichoi and Taabu landed a try each in the dying minutes of the game with Taabu converting the two successfully for a 33-7 win over Zambia
