Frankfurt marathon: Vivian Cheruiyot goes for her second marathon

Reigning 5,000m Olympic champion Vivian Cheruiyot will be competing in this year’s Frankfurt marathon set for 29th October in the Germany City.

Cheruiyot, the multiple IAAF world champion will be competing in her second marathon after she ran in Virgin London marathon where she finished fourth (2:23.50) in a race won by her Iten based neighbour and former half marathon record holder Mary Keitany with a world record.

As athletes compete in the race in its 26th year, the 34 year old Cheruiyot has had superlative races on track winning in both 5,000m and 10,000m races.

The mother of two will be expecting to continue with her road race superlative performance the way she did with her 20 year track dominance.

A fortnight ago, Cheruiyot failed to defend her Great North run half marathon title she won in 2016 as Keitany overpowered her to win the race as she came second in 1:07.44, her best time in the 21km distance.

Kenyan athletes have not dominated the race since inception in 1981. Caroline Kilel was the last Kenyan to win the race in 2013 clocking in 2:22.34. Ethiopian Meselech Melkamu holds the course record at 2:22.01 set in 2012.
