Geoffrey Kirui gives Kenya first gold at London championships

He surprised many when he won Boston marathon in April and again, he became the first Kenyan to win gold medal for Kenya at the ongoing IAAF world championships in London.

Geoffrey Kirui beat a host of elite athletes to emerge victorious Boston Marathon winner Geoffrey Kirui earned Kenya men’s marathon gold at the IAAF World Championships in London.

The 24-year-old athlete clocked 2:08.27 for gold beating  Olympic 10,000m bronze medallist Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia to silver in 2:09.49 while Tanzanian Felix Simbu settled for bronze in  2:09.51 his historic world championships f

Two-time world marathon champion Abel Kirui last won Kenya men’s marathon gold at the 2011 world championships in Daegu.That was after he won at the 2009 Berlin world in a championships record of 2:06.54.

Kenyan had paraded the reigning London Marathon winner Daniel Wanjiru and 2016 Mumbai marathon winner Gideon Kipketer alongside Kirui.

Kirui showed his fine form managing to keep the pace with Tola running side by side.The athlete last year October secured victory at the Amsterdam marathon in a time of 2:06.27.
