Gor Mahia progress to group stage

Kenyan international Francis Kahata lone goal sent Gor Mahia to the group stages of the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) league in a match played at Lucas Maripe Stadium, South Africa on Wednesday night.

The 16 times Kenya Premier League (KPL) champions lost 2-1 to the hosts Supersport but away goal rule saved Gor Mahia 2-2 aggregate on final whistle as the Kenyan side became the first team to progress to the group staged of the continental football in the new era.

Kahata scored an all important goal to help K’Ogalo sail through to restore Kenyan confidence of progressing after Harun Shakava had an on-goal.

Shakava had put the hosts ahead on 59th minute but Kahata made it 1-1 on the 60th minute with a quick start after the on-goal.

With Kahata’s goal, the hosts needed at least two more goals to assure themselves a place in the group stages and they kept the pressure and paid off on 68th minute when Thabo Mnyamane netted the second for the hosts in the 68th minute.

The reigning champions had a one goal advantage before traveling to South Africa. Gor scored one goal in the first leg at the Machakos stadium a week ago through Jacques Tuyisenge’s penalty.
