Kenyan side Lakers lost their first match against defending champions Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in the ongoing African women’s Cup for Clubs Champions at the Nairobi City Park.
Strathmore University women’s Hockey team the Scorpions played out to a 1-1 draw against Army Ladies at the same venue.
The Ghanaian side took the lead through Charity Akoto’s goal in the 48th minute and the Kenyan side leveled through Diana Awino in the 59th minute.
The Kenyan champions will play Delta Queens from Nigeria on Friday before tackling local rivals Lakers on Saturday.
Making their maiden appearance at the continental championships, Lakers lost 4-1 to the experienced side GRA after finishing third in the Kenya Hockey Union women’s Premier League.
With seven points, Lakers started on a low key, with a 1-all draw against compatriots Blazers and beat Army Ladies of Ghana 2-0 with a walk over against Kada Queens from Nigeria to remain second behind leaders Army Ladies of Ghana.
Blazers are third with seven points but with an inferior goal difference.
GRA earned their goals through Vivian Markour, who scored two while Elizabeth Opuku and Mercy Ackon (49th) scoring a goal each with Euryla Cherotich’s consolation for Lakers.
