GSU, Kenya Prison win Nandi County volleyball tournament

Champions General Service Unit (GSU) and Kenya Prisons won the inaugural Nandi County volleyball tournament that was played on Sunday 27th at Kapsabet Showground in Nandi County.

GSU, who remained unbeaten in the whole Kenya Volleyball league defeated former champion Kenya Prisons 3-1 while Kenya Prison beat Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) in similar sets to lift men and women titles respectively.

Following their good run in the league, the Red Berets will lead their rivals Kenya Prison, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Kenya Defence Forces for the national play-off. Their unmatched show was good as they recorded a 25-19, 22-25, 25-21 and 25-17 for the as women won in 18-25, 25-18, 22-25 and 20-25

GSU head coach Gideon Tarus said the boys are ready for play-off despite facing various challenges due to injuries recorded.

 “This year, I have not lost any match and I thank God that I will be facing top teams at the play-offs,” said Tarus.

Women champions head coach Josp Barasa said he has had good season.

“Winning this tournament was not easy after working hard at the semifinals. It wasent easy especially beating Kenya Pipeline at the semifinals (KPC),” said Barasa.

“All teams that have qualified into the play-offs are good and we have to give our best to defend our title,” added Barasa. 

Despite losing the Nandi title, KCB leads the play-off as well as Kenya Prison, Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) and Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI).

At the semifinals, Kenya prison women defeated Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) in 25-15, 25-20, 22-25, 20-25 and 13-15 to cut into the final against KCB while KCB defeated their  counterparts KCB B 3-0 (22-25, 19-25 and 23-25).

In men semis, GSU thrashed Equity Bank in straight sets of 22-25, 19-25 and 23-25 in semifinal one before Kenya Prison stunned Kenya Ports Authority 2-3 in 16-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-21 and 7-15 in second semi to qualify into the final.
