Harambee Stars: Erick Johana salvages a point in a friendly

Erick Johana secured a point for Kenya national football team Harambess Stars against Mozambique in an international friendly match played on Saturday.

As Mozambique was headed for a win in the capital Maputo Johana stole the celebrations for the home team as his late strike salvaged the 1-1 draw in the FIFA international period.

Following a barren draw in the opening half, Mozambique took the lead through Bidvest Wits striker Dominguez Pelembe in the 59th minute but former Mathare United forward Eric Johanna would ensure he netted once again against the Mambas with a late equalizer. The Vasalund IF midfielder had scored the lone goal when both teams last met in Nairobi back in November 2016 in the reverse friendly tie.

The draw means Stars have only lost one match under the tutelage of head coach Stanley Okumbi. Kenya had been on an eleven match unbeaten streak before going down 1-2 to Sierra Leone in June this year in their opening 2019 AFCON Qualifiers match in Leone after being reduced to ten men following the sending off of Brian Mandela in the first half.

The team will now hope they can get another friendly clash in the next FIFA window before their major assignment against Ghana in the 2019 African Cup of Nations Qualifiers in March next year; the group also contains Ethiopia who lost their opening game against Ghana.
