Kenya Lionesses, the national women’s rugby 7s team made history after winning the World Rugby 7s Challenger Series that came to an end yesterday in Krakow, Poland.
This was the first time Kenya Lionesses won the international title and crowned as the overall champions.
Under Dennis Mwanja, Lionesses won both South Africa Challenger Series 1 and 2 Main cup before finishing third in Krakow, earning a total of 56 points, two better than South Africa.
In Krakow, Lionesses recorded mixed results, beating Belgium 12-0, lost 28-12 to Thailand and a 12-7 victpry against Colombia to see them to the semifinals.
At the semifinal, Kenya lost 22-10 to South Africa and managed to revenge against Thailand 27-19 in the third play-off to earn the title.
Krakow champions South Africa massed 54 points for second while Argentina and Colombia finished third and fourth respectively.
Thus, the top four teams; Kenya, South Africa, Argentina, and Colombia qualified for the final promotion playoffs set to take place in Los Angeles, where they will face the bottom four teams from the Women’s top tier series.
