Jebet, Kanda targeting Africa junior titles

Reigning East Africa Youth championships 1,500m gold medallist Agnes Jebet and North Rift junior champio Feliciana Kanda are all set to shine at the Africa 18 championships set for Abidjan, Ivory coast.

After both missed a ticket for the world cross country championships slot when they finished 12th and 13th places respectively during national trials in Eldoret last month, they are chasing an African title as part of their relief.

Speaking during the Rift Valley Secondary Schools Sports Association  (RVSSSA) that cane to an end over the weekend at Tambach Teachers Training College in Elgeyo Marakwet County, they vowed to take the continental title after IAAF announced that the world under 18 championships held in Nairobi in 2017 were the  last ones and reduced to continental championships.

Jebet, the form two student at Kapkenda girl’s finished 4th at Africa Youth championships in Algeria before coming second to Kanda in 5,000m during the school games to book for national championships title.

“My target is not the national trials because I know I will prevail. What I need is to win the Africa title after missing last year in Africa Youth Games,” said Jebet.

Kanda, a four for student at Kapsait secondary school, who runs alongside World under 20 5,000m champion Edward Zakayo said she received much experience at the national cross country cum national trials and she will be using them at the Africa championships.

“I lost an opportunity during the national trials but I have  another chance to prove my running skills his year. I need gold at the African championships,” said Kanda who specialises in 5,000m.
