Journalist Andenga, teenager Aluvi and veteran Shegu proposed as National Heroes

The National Heroes Council has nominated 31 sports men and women to be declared as 2025 national Heroes during this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations set for October 20th.

As part of celebrating sports in the country, the council has had to propose the names, in all sporting disciplines and journalists in the sector.

  1. Kennedy Omwange Ndemo: He is being honoured for his contribution to sports particularly athletics. He has trained athletes and other professionals in the sports ecosystem who have produced sterling performances. Through his philanthropic organization Alidais Group Kenya, he has shaped and nurtured young talented youths and helped them acquire sports scholarships both nationally, regionally and internationally.
  2. Clarence Mwakio Ingalwa: He is being recognized for his contribution to sports. He has played a major role in the expansion of Tong-IL Moo-Do in Kenya. As a player he participated and won gold, silver, and bronze medals in various global championships thus bringing glory to Kenya. He is also a trainer who has coached many athletes who have excelled in Tong-il Moo-Do and have won numerous medals for Kenya. In 2013, he founded the Annual Mombasa Open Tong-il Moo-Do International Martial Arts Championship that brings together competitors from across the globe thus promoting sports, tourism, inter-cultural exchange and uplifting the economy.
  3. Vincent Ongera Onsomu: He is being honoured for his contribution to Kenyan Rugby for over two decades. As a key member of the Kenya Simbas from 2003 to 2013, he earned twenty-five (25) international CAPS. He was instrumental in Kenya’s victories in the Elgon cup (2008-2011), Victoria Cup (2010) and the Africa Rugby Cup (2011). At the club level, he was crowned Kenya Cup Top Try Scorer and player of the Year (2010) with the Kenya Harlequins, and won 5 Kenya Cup titles, three (3) Enterprise Cups, and six (6) Rugby Super Series championships. In 2004, while a student at Strathmore University, he helped revive and lead the University rugby team, laying the groundwork for the now prominent Strathmore Leos. He has inspired generations of players
  4. Nicholas Chumba Musonye: He is being honoured for his contribution to soccer development in East and Central Africa. As a secretary general of Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations, he organized tournaments that provided opportunities to promote the talents and image of Kenyans and other Africans in world soccer. He has been guiding and steering Kenya’s preparations to host African Nations Championship 2024 tournament and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2027).
  5. Mourice Omondi Aloo: He is being recognized for his contribution to Karate. He is the first Kenyan Karate instructor to start East Africa Gojukai Karate Championship as well as conduct the referees and judges course. He has positively changed people’s lives by using Karate as a platform to promote self-defense, physical fitness, create awareness of the dangers of drug abuse and high levels of self-discipline
  6. Shadrack Andenga Odinga: He is being recognized for his contribution to sports through media reporting. As a sports journalist, commentator and analyst, he covers players and makes them get recognized and be recruited. He helped elevate the profiles of individual Kenyan youngsters globally during the Talanta Hela Championships and the Safaricom Chapa Dimba in 2024 resulting in some of them being drafted to the national Harambee Stars team as well as the Kenyan Premier League clubs. Additionally, his investigative sports documentaries on radio and T.V have illuminated corruption in sports among other vices. This has led to drastic action among leaders and change of policies, hence more protection and enhanced athlete welfare as well as safety in and out of competition
  7. Catherine Mutwa Makau: She is being honoured for her contribution to sports coaching and operational management. She is a certified coach in JUDO sports, Martial Arts and the founder of Jenga Athletic Club (KEA) in Mwingi west where she supports and nurtures emerging talented young athletes using her personal resources. As a military officer she also coaches her fellow colleagues
  8. Clinton Aluvi Owatinya: He is being honoured for winning a gold medal in 100m in Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) U18 and U20 Championships in Nigeria 2025
  9. Cynthia Chepkirui: She is being honoured for winning a gold medal in 3000m and a bronze medal in 800m in Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) U18 and U20 Championships in Nigeria 2025
  10. Nancy Chepngetich Makani: she is being honoured for winning a gold medal in 800m in Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) U18 and U20 Championships in Nigeria 2025
  11. Mildred Omari Cheche: She is being honoured for her contribution in football development. As a Coach, she spearheaded the U17 Starlet team to the ladies 2024 World Cup for the first time in the history of the country
  12. Erick Sikuku: He is being honoured for his achievement in race walk. He is the World Masters champion and a winner of a gold medal 5000m race walk and 10km Road Race walk in Sweden (2024) and USA (2025)
  13. Rebecca Koroso Kerubo: She Rebecca is being honoured for winning gold medal in Hammer Throw in the World Masters Competition in Poland (2024).
  14. Pauline Sheghu: She is being feted for her contribution to motorsport in Kenya. She has been a 3-time podium finisher during the World Rally Championships. As part of the first all-women crew to conquer the grueling World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally finishing on the podium three times in a row 2023, 2024 and 2025 in a male-dominated field. For over 15 years, she has championed women’s participation in motorsports earning global acclaim
  15. Linet Ayuko Osiako: She is being honoured for her contribution to motorsport. She is an accomplished Rally Co-driver with over 14 years’ experience in Motorsport. She was part of the first all-women crew to conquer the grueling World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally
  16. Sharon Bitok Jeptarus: She is being honoured for her achievements in Deaflympic games. She won silver medals in 800m and 1500m in Brazil (2022).
  17. Wandia Lucas Wanjiru: Heis being honoured for his achievements in Deaflympic games. He won gold medals in 3000m steeplechase in Brazil (2022) and in Turkey (2017)
  18. Anne Lichina: She is being honoured for her role of being a sign language interpreter in deaf sports. She has interpreted for deaf federations and through her interpretation most of the deaf sports have been able to register their federations thus enabling the participation of the deaf in various sports thus promoting their inclusion.
  19. Jairus Ongeta: He is being honoured for winning won gold medals in 100m and 400m 2025 Grandpix Dubai Paralympics as a person with disability (PWD). He also won silver and bronze medals at the IBSA power Lifting and Bench press in Almalty Kazkhstan in May 2025
  20. Faith Ogallo: She is being honoured for winning gold medal in 2025 African Open Series Zone Five Taekwondo Championship, she was also a gold medalist in university games East Africa 2018 in Dodoma
  21. Kennedy Ogada: He is being honoured for being an accomplished Kenyan paracyclist (Tandem B and A) Paralympian with a track record in local and international competitions
  22. Fabian Kungu Gathoni: She is being honoured for being the guide to Kennedy Ogada a Tandem B and A Paralympian
  23. Parin Simiyu: She is being feted for her contribution to Netball. As the national netball team captain, she inspired the Team to the African Championship in South Africa 2022 and Botswana 2024; World championships rankings in Singapore and Dubai 2025
  24. James Ngarariga Kagambi: He is being honoured for becoming the first Kenyan citizen to summit Mt. Everest the highest point on earth in May 2022. He continues to mentor and inspire rock climbers in Kenya
  25. Morris Okolla Alfayo: He is being honoured for his contribution in being a professional heavyweight boxer having contended for seventeen (17) bouts and won thirteen (13) technical knock outs (TKO) both locally and internationally. On September 21, 2024, he headlined the main event at Charter Hall in Nairobi against Cedric Oliver of Mauritius. Okolla won by unanimous decision over six rounds. In 2023, he achieved a swift victory by TKO in just 20 seconds against Yannick Katuta Manda at Charter Hall. He was crowned Kenyan national heavyweight champion in 2015 after defeating James Nyariki. In September 21, 2024: he won in a unanimous decision against Louis Cedric Oliver in Nairobi (“clash of the giants” event). He has achieved notable success as an amateur boxer in the lightheavyweight category. At the Africa zone five championships in Nairobi, he delivered a standout knockout, defeating Uganda’s Twaib Mayanja in the fourth round to claim gold for Kenya in that division
  26. Abraham Mutala Mukulu: He is being honoured for his contribution in sports. He has coached volleyball teams up to national level since 2015 up to date with an achievement of the team finishing top three. He has officiated volleyball competitions during national intercollegiate games since 2015 to date
  27. Wesley Ogam Rabok: He is being honored for his role in Harambee Stars. He scored two crucial goals for Harambee Stars during 2024 CHAN Championship. He was the top scorer
  28. Omar Aboud: He is being honored for his role in the Kenyan Football Sector and Harambee Stars. He was captain during 2024 CHAN. He led the team to quarter –finals
  29. Bryne Omondi: He is being honored for his contribution in the Kenyan Football Sector and Harambee Stars. He earned Man of the Match award with outstanding goal keeping displays
  30. Alpha Onyango: He is being honored for his contribution in the Kenyan Football sector and Harambee Stars. He received man of the match award for influencing midfield performance twice.
  31. Nicodemus Kimathi Musau: He is being honored for his contribution in the Kenyan Football Sector and Harambee Stars. He is the Team Manager and Data Analyst for Harambee Stars. He drove the integration of technology and sports science supporting the teams historic run to the quarter finals for 2024 CHAN
