Kagimu beat Kipkemboi to win Eldoret Cycle 100 title

Ugandan Charles Kagimu and Joyce Nyaruri were crowned the champions of the inaugural Eldoret Cycle 100 championships held today in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

Kagimu, with over four years of professional cycling won the men’s 100km title, beating Kenyan Salim Kipkemboi ahead of Commonwealth Games that will be held in Birmingham, England between 28th July to August 8th 2022.

Kagimu, who trains in Kaptagat has competed at the Tour of Thailand, Tour of Rwanda as well as Africa Championships won the title in 2:38.19 ahead of Kipkemboi who came second in 2:38.20 while Paul Lomuria completed the podium in 2:47.07.

The Ugandan said that he is happy to have won in Kenya, which is more of his home than Uganda.

“Kenya is more home than Uganda because I came to this country when I was a teenager. The competition was stiff but my training gave me the best results,” said Kagimu.

Kipkemboi, who will be cycling in Birmingham has also set his focus, not just at the Queens Games but ready to peddle all the at the Route Occitanle in France next month and Sibiu Cycling Tour in Romania.

“I have a busy calendar and finishing second here with my team mate winning, it is part of the best training for me. I have three important races so far and I need endurance, which I have managed today,” said Kipkemboi who last month Competed at Tour of Thailand finishing in 7th position.

The 100km riders covered two running counties of Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet with the aim of conserving Kaptagat Forest that also covers the two counties, starting from Ilula in Uasin Gishu County, through Talget, Kichawa, Kaptarakwa in Elgeyo Marakwet County, Nyaru, Kaptagat and back to Ilula for the finish.

In Black Mamba category, Joseph Gachora was the victor in 1:20.08 followed by Gibson Alwanda (1:20.09) and John Muchiri completing the podium in 1:24.20.

Peter Karanja won the Mountain Bike category in 3:06.56 followed by Julius Kaiguara (3:17.15 and Joseph Kariuki coming third timing 3:29.24.
