Kakamega Forest Marathon cancelled

This year’s Kakamega Forest marathon has been cancelled for lack of committed sponsorship.

On Saturday, race director George Murila said that the annual race in the their 7th year has been called off due to financial constraints.

Murila, he said, “This is to inform you that the planned Kakamega Forest Marathon for 23rd to 25th of November will not take place due to insufficient budget, Our Esteemed Financial Partners are unable to come on board this year due to various factors (both internal & external) that have adversely affected their financial bottom lines amongst them.”

Murila felt saddened that they will not be able to provide to their main clients who are the athletes and also not being able to provide a  platform to compete while highlighting the need to conserve the forest and environment.

“We at KFHF understand their economy based valid reasons for their inability to come on board but are at the same time saddened that we will not be able to provide our beloved Athletes a platform to compete while highlighting the need to conserve our forest and environment” said Murila.

This will be the second time that this race has been cancelled after the 2021 edition was also called off due to raging Covid-19 Pandemic that had engulfed the country.

Last year’s edition was one of the toughest and entertaining race in the women category where a new winner an unknown West Pokot’s Emily Jepkemoi beat former Boston Marathon champion Rita Jeptoo.

The men category was won by Bernard Cheruiyot.

Another highlight was the race organisers footed a whole hospital bill of over Kshs 200,000 for Silas Kiprop who broke his leg while participating in the race. He has since recovered and was among those who were planning for a return to say thank you
