Karichu wins Sigona Bowl

Limuru Country golf club golfer John Karichu won the 58th edition of Sigona Bowl, the Golfer of the Year (Goty) opener at the over the weekend at the par 72 Sigona Golf Course.

Karichu, five over 221 in the two day event that ended on Sunday evening at the Kiambu based golf club.

He started well on Sunday shooting two over 74, and one over 73 on the opening day.

But luck came in handy at the last day when he produced a sterling performance shooting two over 74 to emerge victorious in the Goty event that will conclude in December after 17 countrywide meetings.

“I took advantage of experience on the course to win the event. I will be trying my best to clinch the Goty award title (Currently held by Kenneth Bollo) this year,” said Shah.

Royal Nairobi club’s Jay Sandhu finished second playing seven over 223 behind Karichu with two shots. Sandhu had a mixed results on the opening day with six over 78 and one under 71 before completing the Sunday play with two over 74 ahead of Vet Lab’s Edwin Mudanyi on count back after both shooting 223. Mudanyi registered 72, 75 and 76 to complete the podium.

Railway Club’s Alfred Nandwa came in a distance 4th overall with 225 (77, 73 and 75) ahead of Bo Ciera of Royal Club on count back who managed 73, 74 and 78.

Playing on home golf course Shiv Shah played eight over 226 (73, 77 and 76) as former national captain Robinson Owiti from vet Lab followed with 229 (82, 74 and 73) as fellow club member Jackson Mwangi lost on count back in 76, 75 and 78.

Great Rift Valley player Simon Njogu was in 9th position after playing 230 (78, 77 and 75) as Railway Club’s Samuel Njoroge completed the top ten places with 231 (79, 75 and 77).
