Kenyan Archers Shine at Africa Championship

Gloria Kitali is now the African Women’s champion in barebow archery. She won the crown at the recently concluded 14th Africa Archery Championship held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, from the 19th to 23rd November. In the barebow mixed teams category, Gloria partnered with Roy Ncheeri and narrowly lost the gold, settling for silver.

In the women’s mixed team recurve category, the women’s trio of Shehzana Anwar, Samira Fazal and Diramu Elema bagged a bronze. With one gold, one silver and a bronze, Kenya was ranked 6th on the continent at the championships. This is a great improvement from the 2022 edition, where we only had one silver medal. The hosts, Côte d’Ivoire, topped the medal table with 3 gold medals.

“Archery in Kenya is on a growth trajectory; we are glad to see the fruits of our 2020-2025 strategic plan. We hope to open more clubs in the country and spread the sport,” Said the Secretary General of KASO, Paul Ochieng.

The coach, Tabassum Anwar, was equally impressed by her team, “ the current team is young and hungry for results, and I think if we continue like this, we shall make a return to the Olympics in LA 2028”.
