Michael Kibet and Vicoty Chepngeno won the Athletics Kenya North Rift championships held today at the Kishaunet Showground in West Pokot County.
In a five county contest involving Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, West Pokot, Turkana and Samburu, Kibet emerged victorious in 10km senior men to book a slot for the national cross country ahead of Africa cross country championships in Lome, Togo.
He won the title in 30:11.68 beating compatriot Linus Kales to second in 30:20.68 with Emmanuel Rutto completing the podium timing 30:31.28.
Chepngeno edged out former world cross country champion Irene Cheptai for the title in 33:27.19 and 33:54.94 in position 1 and 2 respectively before Daisy Kimeli rouned off the podium in 34:44.94.
Feliciana Kanda Jepkoesgei and Kelvin Kibiwott were crowned the winners in 6km and 8km junior women and men respectively.
Kanda (20:46.46) from Elgeyo Marakwet defeated her compatriot Africa cross country runner Zena Chemutai (21:07.29) and Sheila Chebiwott (21:33.34).
In men, Elgeyo Markwet’s Kibiwott won in 21:10.97 ahead of compatriot Timothy Kibet (24:25.50) and Turkana’s Fredrock Lomong’ode (24:28.18).
