Kibii to lead elite athletes at UoE Cross country championships

Gideon Kipchumba Kibii will be among top athletes that will be chasing the University of Eldoret cross country championships title set for this tomorrow, Saturday 18th March at the University’s pavilion.

Kibii said that he will be seeking his maiden victory this year to start off the season.

“I will try my best to gain good results,” he said.

The UOE Director of Sports Kibet Rono said that the race will be a celebration of ten years since they were handed a charter in 2013 by the late president Mwai Kibaki.

Rono explained that the institution has been associated with athletics and that is why they are setting up a cross country race to celebrate the milestone.

“This is a new race in the university to celebrate ten years since we were handed the service charter. It will also mark the last days of the university’s vice Chancellor Professor Theresia Akenga,” said Rono.

Athletes will be competing in four categories in a university that has been hosting a UOE cross country in November, was put on hold due to the surge of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.

The race will consist of elite athletes competing in 8km men and women, 6km junior men and 4km junior women, UOE students and guests to compete in 2km while children between 8-12 years will run 2km.

“We intend to have a very good race now that we have very few races in the country at the moment and that will attract top athletes from all walks of life. The athletes will enjoy good running in the scenic environment as part of endurance for major events this year,” said Rono.
