Kenyan Philemon Kiptoo Kipchumba and Ethiopian Siranesh Yirga Dagne were the winners of today’s Shanghai marathon.
In men, Kipchumba set a new course record for the race after winning in 2”05.35, erasing the past record of 2:0714 set by compatriot Paul Lonyangata.
The 25 year old defeated top athletes like former World Marathon bronze medallist Alphonce Felix Simbu of Tanzania, Solomon Kirwa Yego, Kenneth Keter and Enock Onchari.
“This is my first visit to Shanghai, the course is beautiful and the weather is just perfect, that helped me to set a new record,” said,” Kipchumba.
In women 23 year-old Dagne beat a strong and deep field that included the 2014 World Half Marathon bronze medallist Kenyan born turned Bahraini Eunice Chebichii Chumba and the 2001 World Youth 3000m champion, Selly Chepyego Kaptich.
Dagne who finished third at this year’s Dubai marathon, cut the tape first in a time of 2:21.28 with Kaptich coming home in second place in 2:21.55. The reigning NN Rotterdam Marathon champion, Chumba, wrapped up the podium three finishes in 2:22.20.
The race course record of 2:20.36 set five years ago by Yebrgual Melese of Ethiopia remains standing.
