Kipngeno and Jebet shine at Nandi Mountain Running

Reigning World Mountain and Trail Running Championship 8.5km champion Patrick Kipng’eno and former Olympic Games 3,000m steeplechase champion Ruth Daniel Jebet won the second edition of Nandi Barngetuny Memorial Mountain Run held on Sunday in Tinderet, Nandi County.

Kipngeno from Nakuru County, who plans to defend his world title won the 12km senior men title in 56:21.51 followed by race Nandi runner Josephat Kiprotich (57:22.38) and Hillary Maiyo (57:36.09) for top three positions with the winner pocketing kshs 100,000.

After conquering the Nandi Mountain and terrains, said that running in the mountain is not easy but needs determination.

“I almost lost the race after falling in one of the terrains but I managed to wake up and finished as a champion,” said Kipngeno.

He added that his next challenge will be to defend his Meru Mountain Running title.

“This victory is good for me as I prepare to defend my Meru title,” said Kipngeno.

His closest competitor and the world mountain running silver medalist Philemon Kirongo Ombogo finished a distance 6th after falling in the 8km.

“I was leading between 1-8km but I fell along the way hence losing this title and missing the podium. But the miss has not stopped me from running well. I want to face another challenge in Meru,” said Kirongo.   

Coming from doping ban, Daniel won the women title in 69:05 ahead of Bornes Kitur (69:47) and Ruth Chepkemoi (72:58).

Athletics Kenya president Jack Tuwei said the race is new in Kenya and they have to embrace the new kid for prosperity of talents.

“This is a new career that needs to be nurtured. These athletes are ahead of us in terms of preparations after they went ahead to win gold and silver at the World Mountain and Terrace running last year. It is a good race and we must guard it very well,” said Tuwei.

The race started at Lelgotet junction along Maraba road and ended at Kimatkei Primary School.

In the cross country race, Shadrack Kipchirchir won the 6km under 20 men title ahead of Jackton Kipkosgei and Bernard Kipchirchir.

In the women under 20 6km, Ann Naenkop won the race ahead of Ailin Chepkoech and Hanna Njeri.

Fredrick Kosgei and Faith Chelangat were the winners of 4km under 18 boys and girls respectively.
