Koulibaly, Sarr, Valencia, Gakpo and De Jong scores as Senegal and Netherlands progress at world Cup

Senegal and the Netherlands became the first teams to qualify into the best sixteen at the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Doha, Qatar.

With conclusion of pool A matches, Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly scored in the last minute to hand Senegal into the World Cup knockouts with 2-1 victory against Ecuador.

The victory put the west African in second position with four points behind pool leaders Netherlands who beat hosts 2-0.

Ismaila Sarr converted from the spot to give Senegal a 1-0 lead before Ecuador’s Enner Valencia leveled in the 67th minute before Koulibaly scored the winner. Ecuador only needed a draw to progress.

In the Netherlands’ match, Cody Gakpo was on target to hand Qatar matching orders at home.

The Louis van Gaal side scored first through Frenkie de Jong and Gakpo scored late to seal the victory to complete the pool on top with 7 points.
