Former world marathon record holder Patrick Makau and former world cross country silver medalist Patrick Ivuti will lead other athletes at the Southern Region Athletics Party and Meeting scheduled for Saturday 14th in Machakos.
Makau, the former Berlin marathon champion will also be accompanied by former Boston marathon champion Cosmas Ndeti and US based Festus Kasyoka to promote the sport among the upcoming athletes.
With the theme United to Save Athletics Talent in the region, event organizer led by Philip Muia said they want to bring together all running family for a better future.
“This event is being organized by retired Athletes from the Southern region and more than 100 athletes from the region are invited to attend,” said Muia.
As the year comes to an end, Muia said it will be an opportunity for retired athletes to motivate young athletes ahead of 2020 world under 20 championships to be held in Nairobi.
“We want to meet and party with first agenda by retired Athletes like Makau, Ndeti, and Ivuti to encourage upcoming Athletes on running clean. Encourage them on performance as we wait Athletics World U20 championship here Kenya,” said Muia.
Apart from the meeting and partying there will be gift from retired athletes for Christmas festivities as well as training facilities.
“With world under 20 ahead of us, young athletes need some training facilities and they will give to the local upcoming athletes who managed to get top 30 places in the 1st AK cross country meeting that was held in Machakos on 23rd November 2019,” added Muia.
The event comes in less than a week after Athletics Kenya held its Athletes Annual Seminar in Eldoret
