Mclingeyo and Mongeli are 2024 Kenya National Chess Championships winners

Robert Mclingeyo and Woman Fidel Master Sasha Mongeli were the winners of the 2024 Kenya National Chess Championship (KNCC) that came to an end yesterday at the Makini school, Nairobi.

The 18 year old sensation Candidate Master (CM) Mcligeyo won the open division to drive home a car, a Nissan Note worth Sh1.8 million by the Chess Kenya Federation (CKF).

After dethroning the defending champion Joseph Methu, he won the open section, accumulating eight points ahead of Jackson Ndegwa, who finished with 7.5 points.

The event attracted top players like Shem Aberi (1738), Hadem Nyamiaka (1785), Felix Boera (1891), Brian Kadenge (1843), CM Aguda Lwanga (1845), and his former coach, Methu (1976). He also held his ground in draws against Hillary Sagwa (1854) and Allan Chumba (1832).

Mongeli successfully defended her title with a prize money of Sh100, 000 for her efforts.
