Mercy Cherono ready to compete as a mother

Former Commonwealth Games 5,000m champion Mercy Cherono will be returning into world championships from maternity leave to redeem her image at the world championships set for next month in Doha, Qatar.

After winning silver at the 2013 championships in Moscow, Russia, Cherono said her intention is to make into team Kenya at the national championships cum trials at Nyayo National Stadium in three weeks time.

The two-time world junior 3,000m champion said she is back to take her position in the track.

“I am back in training and all the things that I was doing before am now doing them as I train for the trials. Now I have no pressure as am working on the trails and depending on my body fitness respond well as I am praying that all will be well to run well at the trials,” said Cherono who won gold in 2018 and 2010 world junior titles in 3,000m.

The 2010 world junior 5,000m silver medalist said she will be competing in 5,000m but she says this time it will be different.

“All things have changed because I will be running as a mother unlike before and stronger than before. After maternity, we run well because we had enough time to recover. Any time you train you are exhausted but after maternity, you run as if you are starting again. Just like a kindergarten pupil, you have too much energy to perform,” added the 2010 world junior cross country, silver medalist.

Cherono won the 2014 Commonwealth Games in 5,000m title but missed to defend her title in 2018 as she was in the maternity leave.

“Winning a title will be great for me and the country at large because I have had a good time in training as well as some championships in the country,” added Cherono.
