Organizers of the 2024 Sevila marathon will pbserve a minute of silence for the departed World Marathon champion Kelvin Kiptum who died on road accident on Sunday.
In a statement they said: “Before the start of the marathon on Sunday, we will pay tribute to Kelvin Kiptum, the world record holder, and his coach, who died in a traffic accident. We will observe 42 seconds of silence, as many as kilometres of the race, in his memory,” they said in a statement.
At the starting lineup, the reigning Vienna City Marathon champion Magdalene Masai will lead Kenyans on the course to retain her title.
The 2019 Toronto marathon champion, who won last year’s title in 2:24.12, Masai will be up against Azmera Gebru, the 2018 Paris Half Marathon champion Antonina Kwambai.
In men, defending champion Gadisa Shumie of Ethiopia will be at the starting lineup against the 2019 Gran Canaria Marathon champion Julius Kiprono, 2023 Hannover Marathon bronze medallist Fredrick Kibii, Collins Kemboi and 2023 Zurich Marathon San Sebastian champion Benson Tunyo.
