Mount Elgon to host Anti-FGM half marathon

Mount Elgon will host first ever road in a campaign to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

The Charity 21km Road Race Dubbed “Mount Elgon Run For The Girl Child” to educate the masses on the dangers of FGM in the community, the race will be staged in Kapsokwony, Bungoma county on 25th November in an area known for producing some of the best Kenyan runners.

The region known for soil fertility, has had a number of negatives like the sprouting of Sabaot land Defence Force (SLDF) militia and FGM.

Athletes will have to endure the hilly course with the race starting at Kapsokwony trading centre before ending at Chemoge high altitude training center of Kaptama.

Race organisers under Adventure Youth Group led by Solomon Kiterie said the main aim is to educate the masses on the negative sides of FGM.

“We have had many ways of sending such powerful message in the past but this year, we are goiung to use athletics which can well associate with many athletes from the area,” said Kiterie.

For athletes who will compete in the 21km will register with Kshs 3,00 and the prize money will be kshs 30,000 for the winner in both gender trickling down to tenth finishers.

He mentioned that the event will be flagged by Bernadette Loloju, the Anti FGM Board CEO, Harry Kimtai, the Principal Secretary of Livestock, Bungoma county women representative Catherine Wambilianga among other guests.

“For those participating in the 5km walk, you need a T-shirt. All participants will get a certificate of participation signed by Governor Wangamati and Mrs Loloju,” he said.
