Former Sri Lanka marathon champion Stephen Mungathia Mugambi and former Commonwealth Games marathon silver medalist Helah Kiprop will lead Kenyans at the 2022 Frankfurt marathon set for this Sunday in Germany.
After pacing for Eliud Kipchoge’s world record in Berlin Marathon in September, Mugambi, who finished 5th at last year’s Standard Chartered marathon said that he is ready to face top athletes at the race.
Born and raised in Meru County, Mugambi he was training especially on speed work as he prepares for race.
“I have run many races and winning the 2018 Sri Lanka marathon opened the doors for me and now I want to try running in a major marathon. My coach has been training, giving me good programs like completing 40km, 30km and that is good enough for pacing,” said the 29-year-old runner.
He will be joined by other Kenyans at the race like Martin Kosgey, Charles Ndiema (2:08:12), Brimin Misoi (2:08:41), Dominic Letting (2:09:30) and debutant Linus Maruka.
There will be Ethiopians led by Betesfa Getahun, Gebru Redahgne, Asefa Mengisa Germany’s Hendrik Pfeiffer of Germany.
In women, Sally Kaptich, Helah Kiprop (2:21:27), Jackline Chepngeno (2:24:21), Caroline Jepchirchir (2:26:11), Gladys Chepkurui (2:28:55) and Martha Akeno (2:29:00).
Ethiopian lineup has Yeshi Chekole, Ugandan Juliet Chekwel among others.
