Mulei, Musyoka to fly Field titles as Chepkorir misses out

Gloria Mulei and Philip Musyoka, for the first in history, will be competing in Field events as world under 20 Track and Field starts in Tampere, Finland.

Mulei and Musyoka are the only triple jumpers Gat the champioanships where the team travelled without steeplecaher Mercy Chepkorir.

At 18, Mulei became the youngest ever Kenyan to break the national record after jumping 12.97m during the national trials at Kasarani after missing the qualifying mark of 12.85m during the U20 trials.

Mulei broke Caroline Kola’s national triple jump record holder. Kola national record of 12.91 had stood for 19 years before Mulei, who is a form four student at Kwanthanze shattered it at the National Championships.

Caroline Kola set the record during the Nationals on June 20, 2001.

Besides retaining the title this year, the form four student Kwanthanze, who reached the finals during the World Under-18 Championships last year in Nairobi, was also declared the best athlete, having won the long jump, high jump and 100m race titles.

The 18-year-old Musyoka, who also represented Kenya at the World Under-18 Championships last year, is targeting to reach the finals in Finland, besides improving on his personal best of 16.18m.

Chepkorir missed to travel with Kenyan team due to anomalies in her passport, which indicated that she was male.

Now focus will be on Zena Jemutai to liven the water and barriers race after she won during the trials with Chepkorir finishing second.
