Andrew Mutua Mwanthi won the inaugural Speed Skating Championships held in Eldoret on Sunday.
The Kiambu based skater won the 42km title in a fierce battle as part of his preparations for the Entebbe Skating championships set for next Sunday in Uganda.
“This is my first race after surgery and the victory is good for me as part of my preparations for next Sunday’s Entebbe Open Skating championships,” said Mutua.
Though he said that the government has not supported their efforts, he has hopes of representing the country in various championships.
“I have never competed in any race outside the country but next Sunday I will be competing in Uganda. “I just had leg surgery but still managed to top. I race on the streets. I’ve been racing for three years. I’m focusing on more international events. Our country does not support us, but we still take ourselves to events and participate,” he said.
Race director Victor Kipchumba said that the event has been beautiful, being the inaugural edition, they only offered medals where the sponsors did not meet the budget.
“Despite that, the races went on smoothly. We have not had any major injuries. Our challenge was the venue. This place is not enough. Resources too are inadequate to meet our set expectations. We are calling on the ministry and other corporate to sponsor future events.
