New champion expected at Piga Mingi tournament in Kakamega

New champion is expected at this year’s edition of Piga Mingi golf tournament that will be played at the Kakamega Sports Club on Saturday 11th.

This will happen after the reigning champion Elly Barno will be playing at the grand finale of Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) in Nyali.

Barno from Nandi Bears won the title with 71 nett after shooting 75 gross with organizers targeting over 60 golfers to compete for the title.

Event organizers led by Ivan Opakas said the 2021 edition is aimed at inducting Rookie Golfers into the game as well as encouraging the would-be golfers to take golf as a sport.

“This tournament was started by new golfers with high handicaps starting from the 28 going up but it is an open event where all golfers are expected to play,” said Opakas.

He said that the tournament is a tradition at the Club each year, where high handicapped Golfers come together and organize a tournament.

“It has always been a norm for new golfers in this club to organize a tournament and for me, being handicap 25, i will play as the lowest handicap holder,” added Opakas.

He added that he is expecting golfers from neighbouring clubs such as Nandi, Eldoret, Nyanza, Thika, and Kericho amongst others are expected to tee off.

“We have prepared the ground for about 60 golfers, both the club and across the neighbours so that we enjoy the game. In this tournament, we just want to enjoy golf and make friends on the course,” he added.
