Nyambura and Chelogoi shine at Safaricom junior golf tour in Eldoret

Eleven year-old Marya Nyambura and twenty-year-old Danny Chelogoi were crowned the champions of sixth leg of the Safaricom Golf Tour junior tournament held at the Eldoret Golf Club on Sunday.

Nyambura, a grade six student at Rose of Sharon Academy, carded a total of 92 points to emerge the best girl while the home-based junior golfer Danny Chelogoi garnered a gross of 80 points to emerge the overall boys’ winner.

“This is my second time to participate in the Safaricom Golf Tour tournament. I first participated in the fifth leg at Machakos where I emerged second in my category. I am really impressed with my performance today. I thank Safaricom for this great platform and my parents for supporting me”, said Nyambura

Zadok Tanui took the boys 15 and above title with a gross of 85 points ahead of Nelson Okoth, who scored 88 points. Nancy Wangechi won the girls 15 and over category with 108 points.

In the 13-14 years category, Sasha Jeptumo produced a gross of 112 points to lead her group while Thomas Nderitu scored 111 points to emerge top among the boys. Ryan Kivui, scored 84 points to lead the 11 years boys’ category with Alpha Sabulei finishing second after scoring 90 points.

In the 9- 10 years category, Pendo sang emerged the best girl after scoring 53 points while Jadiel Kipng’etich was named the best boy after scoring 75 points. Axel Mwaura scored 57 points to claim the Boys 7 years and Under Category.

The Eldoret leg of the tour had 63 junior golfers from the region and its environs including the Nyanza and Western counties of Kisumu, Bungoma, Kakamega and Trans Nzoia. Another 53 aspiring juniors participated in the golf clinic.

During Saturday’s senior tournament, Nyanza based Alice Awiti claimed victory after returning 49 stableford points. The next leg of the Safaricom golf Tour heads to Karen Country Golf Club in Nairobi on 13th May.
