Two time Olympic Games 5,000m silver medalist Hellen Obiri and former world half marathon record holder Kibiwott Kandie took honours at the Kenya Defence Forces track and field championships held today at the Ulinzi Sports Complex at the Lang’ata barracks.
Representing Laikipia Airbase, Obiri won the women’s 5,00m title 15:33.93 ahead of Nesphine Jepleting (15:42.9) as former Africa 5,000m champion Sheila Chepkirui in 15:50.4.
Running for Embakasi Garisson, Kandie who is alo the the World Half Marathon silver medallist won the 10,000m in 28.02.47 ahead of Alfred Barkach (28:18.10) and Fredrick Muranga for third in 28:34.3.
The soldiers were using the championships to select a team that will represent them at the national championships set for April 18-30 at the Kasarani stadium.
The two day event continues tomorrow at the same venue
