Okutoyi beat Elhussein to end 46 year old wait for Africa Games tennis title

Kenya’s Angela Okutoyi defeated Lamis Elhussein to win the singles tennis at the ongoing Africa Games in Accra, Ghana today morning.

The kenya champion ended the 46 year long wait for kenya to win a medal in tennis at the championships. In 1978, Jane Davis-Doxzon and Susan wakhungu who won gold and silver during the games in Algiers, Algeria. At the same championships, Kenya’s Paul Wekesa won a bronze.

Okutoyi edged out Zambian Naomi Chileshe (6-3, 6-1), Merna refaat from Egypt (6-3, 6-3), Moroccan Aya El Aouni (6-4, 6-4) and beat defending champion Mayar Sherif in the semifinals yesterday (5-7, 7-5 and 7-6) to qualify for the finals.

The win tally Kenya’s gold to five after Aron Cheminingwa (800m), Emily Ngii (20km recewalk), Beatrice Chepkoech (3,000m steeplechase) and Mary Moraa (800m).

Kenya has also four silver medals and 11 bronze with a total of 21 medals
