Omanyala, brother Omurwa and wife Amutavi rule in athletics

The concluded second leg of Athletics Kenya track and field at the Nyayo National stadium was dominated by family members as they seek to earn a slot for the 2023 edition of World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Commonwealth Games 100m champion Ferdinand Omurwa Omanyala, his young brother Isaac Omurwa and his wife Laventa Luvadwa Amutavi ruled on track as a family worked their way to stardom.

The young Omurwa will form part of the Team Kenya East and Central Africa Athletics Under-20 and Under-18 Athletics Championships where he will be competing in the 100m.

Omurwa is among 15 athletes that comprise seven men and eight women for the Under-20.

Omurwa won the men’s 100m trials in 10.85 seconds

With low key reception, Amutavi competed in the 200m reaching the finals unlike the husband Omanyala who set two world leading times in the two day event that attracted top athletes from East Africa region.

Omanyala set the new world lead in 9.81 to earn a slot in Budapest just as Samuel Kimeta who finished second in 9.94 and South African Henricho Brhintes to third in 10.22.
