Omanyala, Kiprop and Bett to lead top athletes at Nyayo meet

Commonwealth Games 100m champion Ferdinand Omanyala, Africa Games 1,500m champion Quailyne Kiprop and former world under 20 3,000m steeplechase silver medalist Leonard Bett will lead other athletes at this weekend’s Athletics Kenya track and field meet at the Nyayo stadium.

Omanyala will be up against visiting Africa 100m bronze medallist Henricho Bruintjies from South Africa and will be competing in the 100m.

Omanyala, fresh from winning gold at the World Indoor, called on Kenyans to come out and cheer their athletes.

“I have just come from winning indoors and I was chasing time and improving on my speed,” said Omanyala.

Kiprop will be making her debut at the Weekend meet with the sole purpose of winning a title in the 1,500m.

“I am training well here ahead of the race to see how my year will begin on track. I have run cross country and finished in position 26th place at the Sirikwa Classic World Cross country tour,” said Kiprop.

With the Africa Games postponed to 2024, Kiprop will have another year to prepare and defend her title she won in 2019 in Morocco.

Bett will also be making his maiden track weekend meet in Nairobi.

The Bomet based runner said he competed one cross country this year and he is yet to touch the tartan competition.

“I want to try my best at the Nyayo event now that it will be my first track event this year,” he said.
