Allan Oyende amassed +1440 points to emerge victorious at the Scrabble Kenya Jamhuri Scrabble Cup played over the weekend at the Strathmore University.
The Kenya One managed to beat the day one cold on Saturday, where he was in third position to enjoy the second day to win the title to retain his top position in the country.
With country wide series set to resume after they paused due to the coronavirus pandemic, Oyende expressed his pleasure with the return of countrywide meetings to sharpen his skills.
He lost three games on that day that slowed his winning ways but he said he learnt the tacktick and that’s how he managed to beat the rest for the top position.
“The tournament was tough after playing with great players in the meeting. Despite the event being successful, the players had prepared very well to play a high quality game in the tournament,” said Oyende.
He started off well, beating Kipruto Tarus and Joel Birgen but he lost the third game to Daniel Machanje, the Strathmore University lecturer on day one. He went ahead to win against Muema Muumbi and lost the second game to Bio Chemistry lecturer Wenwa Akinyi.
The civil engineer collected himself and defeated Millie Kikech and Edgar Odongkara, round one leader Michael Gongolo and at game 9, he lost to Manase Otieno and lost game 16 to Odongkara for the title.
“This was a tough game and Edgar, despite winning in game 7, he managed to beat me in game 15. When I won game 16, I knew very well that I was going to be a champion. That was the Cup decider,” added Oyende.
He said that when he won the King of the ring, all was set for victory and he managed that.
Second position went to Odongkara who amassed +699 points after losing six games with Fred Magu settling for third on +438 losing similar games.
