Former World Youth 3,000m Champion Richard Kimunyan and upstart Justus Soget will spice up Baringo County Cross country championships set for this Saturday at Metipso Ground.
As Source of Champions and Home of Champions Nandi County and Elgeyo Marakwet County stage their championships at Kapsabet Show-ground and Iten grounds respectively.
Kimunyan, and Soget, who are the products of Kirobon High School will battle out for Central Rift regional championships next weekend in Eldoret.
Kimunyan, who is also the Commonwealth and Africa Youth 3,000m bronze medallist under the management of his former principal Barnabas Kitilit will be competing in 10km senior men following his graduation into senior cadre last year.
But focus will be on Soget Soget who successfully stunned multiple world 1,500m champion Asbel Kiprop, behind Timothy Cheruiyot at the 2017 Athletics Kenya track and field championships at Nyayo National Stadium.
The 19 year-old was the standout athlete in the 1500m finals, coming second behind Timothy Cheruiyot, of Kenya Prisons and ahead of former Olympics gold medalist and Kiprop.
The Form four student was unfazed even as he lined up alongside world beater Kiprop and in the end stole the show by defeating the defending World Champion in his first competition at the senior ranks.
Baringo chairman Kitilit said the event will be great for upcoming athletes as he prepares the team for Africa cross country championships.
“We want to make a good team to propel our county at the regional championships. We want a formidable team and that will be achieved tomorrow,” said Kitilit.
