Philemon Rono and Magdalene Masai were the winners of 2019 Sunday 20th Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon.
Rono recaptured his title he lost last year to compatriot Benson Kipruto, denying him a hat trick.
Rono ran a men race, eclipsing the Canadian all-comers record, winning his third title in 2:05.00 breaking his on course record.
He won the title in 2016, defended in 2017 but lost to Kipruto in 2018 before recapturing it today.
, while women’s champion Masai ran 2:22:14, the quickest women’s marathon in Canadian history.
He beat Ethiopia’s Lemi Berhanu was second timing 2:05.09 with Ugandan Felis Chemonges ending the podium in 2:05.12
Masai won the women’s title in 2:22:16, a new unofficial all-comers record by one second edging out Ethiopia’s Birukayit Eshetu 2:22.40) as Kenya’s Betsy Saina completed the podium timing 2:22.43.
The prize money breaks down as follows: winners earn $30,000. Course and all-comers record-breakers earn another $40,000, and because Rono’s new record was under 2:06:30 and Masai’s was under 2:22:17, they earned an additional $10,000 each
