Rono to lead Torongo athletes for Nandi A.K Cross country meeting

Fresh from winning the world under 20 national trials, reigning Africa 3,000m bronze medalist Gideon Rono will be fighting for the supremacy at the second leg of Athletics Kenya Cross Country meeting to be held at Koitalel Samoei University in Nandi County on Saturday 19th December 2020.

The form four student at Sinonin Secondary school will lead other juniors from Torongo Training Camp in Baringo County under the tutelage of Barnabas Kitilit, Rono will be joined by compatriot Emmanuel Kiplagat in men’s 8km junior race as well as Ismael Kurui 5km and Gilbert Kimunyan in 10Km.

Kitilit said that he will be sending a contingent of top athletes in all categories to ensure that they collect good points ahead of the new season.

“I have about ten athletes that I will accompany to Nandi and good results are the key reasons why we are heading there. Rono is one of the key athletes I will be carrying to Kapsabet,” said Kitilit.

Host chairman Abraham Mutai said that being the first event they are expecting top athletes to compete in the event.

“Most of the athletes have been training alone and this is the best platform to gauge their readiness considering that they have had no race to compete since the outbreak of the Covid-19,”Mutai added.

The Secretary General Kennedy Tanui said the event will kick off at 9am with junior men and women races with also senior races and mixed relays on the program.

“We are set for the race and everything is in place. The first race will start at 9am.I am urging athletes to use the event as a preparation ground for the world cross country championships,”Tanui said.
