Two-time Africa 1,500m champion Winny Chebet will be seeking a consolation at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham after flopping in the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Chebet finished last (13th) in the women’s 1,500m in Oregon after being timed at 4:15.13 in a race won by compatriot Faith Kipyegon in 3:52.96.
She said she is hoping to go back to the drawing board after displaying poor running tactics in Oregon.
“I hope to work extra hard in training ahead of the Commonwealth Games starting next week. I had a bad show here but I hope things will change for the better in Birmingham,” she added.
She said she would like to sit with her coach and review her performance before heading to Birmingham. ” I need to re-strategize after what happened in Oregon. I believe things will change,” said the 2005 World Youth 800m silver medalist.
Chebet, who is also the 2006 world junior 800m silver medallist, noted that Oregon was a learning curve and she is ready to work on her mistakes.
“I am sure I will meet some of the competitors I faced here in Birmingham. This is why I will have to come up with a proper strategy to bring them down,” she added.
“I am thankful to God for not only reaching the final but also for Kenya to win gold in the event through Faith,” said Chebet.
At the Commonwealth Games, she will team up with Ednah Jebitok, who failed to reach the semifinals at the Oregon show.
