Kenya started in a losing note in the 2019/2020 World Rugby series opener at Dubai Sevens in Dubai, Qatar.
The Paul Feenay team lost 17-12 to South Africa in the opening pool D encounter. The Blitzeboke went ahead when Ryan Oosthuizen failed to convert his try for a 5-0 lead, but Alvine Atieno’s try was converted by Daniel Taabu to get a slim 5-7 lead.
Vincent Onyala went past the try-line with Taabu failing to shoot between the posts for 5-12 lead into break.
But South Africa’s Rosko Specman and Seabelo Senatla landed a try each to hand them the win.
Kenya Sevens will now meet England in their second match at 12:26pm, before facing Spain at 6.32pm in their last Pool matches on Friday.
In the same pool, England beat Spain 36-7.
