Stanley Mburu Waithaka win silver in Oregon

World under 18 3,000m bronze medalist Stanley Mburu Waithaka won silver for Kenya at the ongoing World Athletics championships in Oregon, USA.

The former world under 20 5,000m silver medalist won silver behind Ugandan Joshua Chepteget who retained his crown he won in 2019 in Doha

Cheptegei led compatriot Jacob Kiplimo to bronze with 21-year Waithaka winning silver to give Kenya another dry spell to win gold in the 10,000m that was last won by Charles Kamathi in 2001 when he upstaged Ethiopian legend Haile Gebrselassie in Edmonton, Canada in one of the biggest upsets of the competition.

The world 10,000m record holder, Cheptegei crossed the finish line in 27:27.43 to pick gold as Waithaka settled second in 27:27.90 with Kiplimo claimed bronze after clocking 27:27.97.

But race favourite Olympic champion Selemon Barega came 5th in 27:28.39 as USA’s Grant Fisher who timed 27:28.14.

Kenya’s Daniel Mateiko came in eighth position after clocking 27:33.57 while Rodgers Kwemoi settled for 15th position clocking 27:52.26.
