Tanui call for Clean Competition at Eldoret City Marathon

Athletes set to compete at this year’s Eldoret City Marathon have been urged to compete clean come Sunday morning in Eldoret.

Speaking today in Eldoret, Race Director Moses Tanui said there is need to understand the importance of integrity in athletics, warning that strict anti-doping measures will be enforced. All athletes, he said, will be tested in line with standards set by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

“We need you to run clean. We will test athletes according to WADA regulations,” he added.

Registration for the marathon closes on Friday, with organizers confirming that at least 1,200 elite athletes have already signed up, signaling strong interest in the race.

Uasin Gishu County Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim said the marathon is part of efforts to position the region as a global sports hub while driving economic growth and international recognition.

“This race is building Eldoret into a global sports city, boosting economic growth and global recognition,” he said.

The event will also feature a 10km fun run aimed at promoting fitness and community participation.

“We have a 10km fun run where people will run for their health, though there are prizes,” the governor added.

Winners in the main race will receive cash awards from position one to 20, with the top athlete set to pocket Sh3.5 million.

Organizers say the marathon is not only about elite competition but also about inspiring the next generation of athletes.

The Eldoret City Marathon continues to cement its place as one of Kenya’s premier road races, attracting top local and international talent while promoting clean sport, safety and community participation.
