Wachira take a slim lead at Scrabble Kenya year opener

Francis Wachira started the year on high, taking the lead at the first tournament of Kenya Scrabble championships currently happening at Nairobi at Standard chartered headquarters in Westlands.

Playing at home, Wachira took day one lead ahead of Sunday’s final in the two-day extravaganza when he won 7.5 matches out of the possible 10 played on the first day.

Despite the tournament attracting top players like Patrick Litunya, Kenya two Patrick Gitonga Nderitu, Wachira will enjoy the overnight lead as he will fight against top players for the first title of the year.

But the scrabble gurus Gitonga, Litunya lie in the second position just as Mackton Wafula, Michael Gongolo, Ivan Sentongo and Onani Magwanga after winning 7 points.

This sets the competition at an all time high with all 6 having a shot at the championship title.

Fredrick Gitagia leads in the Intermediate division with Francis Gichu of Masinde Muliro University taking second place. In the Open section, Michael Ngaga is in the lead, with Alex Mwangi taking silver.

Action continues tomorrow morning at the same venue.
