We need more food, Coast AK leaders call

Athletics Kenya Coast region has urged the head office to supply enough food to athletes based in the region in the fight against coronavirus that has hit the sporting industry.

With the federation distributing the Stimulus Package through the ministry of Sports, the leaders said the food will cushion many needy athletes from the region after the world under 20 championships had been postponed due to the coronavirus.

Led by the regional chairman Dimmy Kisalu, said the region is endowed with sprints talents which over the years have gone untapped revealing that most of the athletes do not have the basic equipment for training including running spikes.

“We have in the recent past produced national primary and secondary school champions but don’t go far owing to many obstacles including lack of proper training equipment,” said Kisalu.

The lack of qualified trainers in the region has not helped either as most juniors remain ignorant of basic rules of the sport.

Speaking during the food donation by AK Youth and Development sub committee led by Barnaba Korir, Kasilu insisted that they are established a training camp for more than 30 junior athletes at Kijiwetanga Primary School in Malindi, Kilifi County.
