A graduate from Mount Kenya University with a degree in criminology, former world marathon record holder Wilson Kipsang was never promoted while serving Kenyans in the Kenya Police Service.
Born and raised in Muskut, a small village near Fluorspar Mining in Keiyo South in Elgeyo Marakwet County where water is a pressures commodity, the four time London marathon winner was handling small cases like individuals involved in smoking bang where he was stationed in Nyanza.
The outspoken man is the son of a General Service man is an established police officer attached to crimes and investigations officer, who resigned as corporal.
Despite breaking the world record in 2013 running 2:02.23 Kipsang felt the wrath of police ‘brutality’ and was never promoted just like other athletes who are in the service and high school or primary school dropouts.
The former New York marathon winner scored a C+ at Tambach Boys high scho in 2000 before venturing in potato selling business in Molo, Nakuru County to earn a living before he started running.
Unlike other world record breakers, Kipsang is the first athlete to break the jinx in three firsts. In the first case he officially handed over the baton to Dennis Kimetto from his stable when he broke his record.
The second jinx is when he took Mursik (sour milk) to Frankfurt and the last is that unlike other athletes who could be welcomed at the airports with Mursik, Kipsang was welcomed by a Bible at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport where there was no funfair as he headed straight to Mindililwo AIC Church in Iten.
He went ahead to buy church’s musical instruments.
