Elgoeyo Marakwet officials have warned athletes who train in groups risk being arrested and charged in court of law for violating the government directive.
The department of Sports under County Executive Committee (CEC) for Sports, Anita Kimwatan has warned athletes that the laid down rules by the government should be followed to the latter.
The directive comes just a day after 12 athletes were arrested for training in a group against the government ban on social gatherings and sports activities, however, the runners were released without pressing any charges.
“The arrest and release were just but a warning to others who may violet the rules. We had to talk to them, make them understand why the social gathering was imposed to kill the spread of coronavirus,” said Kimwatan.
Among those arrested were 10 Kenyans and two foreigners who were taken to Iten police station but were released.
“Athletes should stop training in groups. We are not against their training but they should do it one by one. This is an order that has to be followed to the later. It was a warning but others will be charged for violating the orders. We urge them to train as individuals,” she added.
Mid this month, the Elgeyo Marakwet county government and Athletics Kenya closed all training camps in the country and athletes instructed to maintain social distancing and train individually.
