Africa Hockey championships: GRA only barrier to Telkom’s 10th title

Ghana Revenue Authority (GRU) is the remaining obstacle for Kenya Champions Telkom to win their record 10 titles of the Africa Cup for Club Hockey Championships currently going on in Accra, Ghana.

The Kenyan side dropped, for the first time a point against Ghana Police in their last match played in a round robin, drawing 1-1 at Theodosia Okoh Hockey ground.

Telkom leads the table with 13 points from five matches while their opponents in tomorrow’s match GRA are rooted second with 10 points.

In the last match encounter, GRA registered a barren draw against Nigerian side Kada Queens, level on points with Ghana Police but the finalists enjoyed the goal difference.

Audrey Omaido put Telkom ahead on 30th minute, netting her third goal in the tournament but her goal was later cancelled by Nafisatu Umaru on 47th minute.

It was the first time Telkom had dropped points in any competition since they drew 2-2 with Strathmore University Scorpions in a KHU women’s Premier League match on July 24, 2016.

Telkom, who are chasing a record 10th title, will now have to overcome GRA for a second time having beaten them 1-0 on Wednesday.

The 20-time national champions opened their account at the tourney with a 5-0 drubbing of Nigeria’s Yobe Desert Queens, before edging out compatriots Strathmore University Scorpions 1-0 in their second match.

They then beat Kada Queens 3-0 to make it three wins on the trot. Strathmore on the other hand have found the going tough losing four straight matches
