Anita Kiptum, a widow to the late athlete Francis Kiplagat mourned the death of her husband, describing him as a man of integrity and care.
On her Facebook page, Kiptum posted a heart-breaking post where she posted a photo of the couple, saying the unbearable pain of losing her loved one after he suddenly stopped communicating with her on phone on Monday night.
Kiplagat was involved a greasy accident as he was chasing his dream as an athlete following his road racing career.
He was in a company of 2010 African men 5000m silver winner, Vincent Yator and Vincent Kiptoo- injured.
The trio were travelling to Nairobi to process travel papers after being invited to race abroad at the time of the accident that occurred at 10:30pm along Nairobi-Nakuru highway at Kikopey area.
Kiptum added in another sorrowful post on the same social media site alongside the photo of the mangled wreck of the North Rift Shuttle vehicle that was one of those involved in the accident.
While he was not one of the most recognisable names in a country blessed with a large reservoir of distance running talent, the death of Kiplagat, 27, had the entire athletics fraternity in the country in grief, with some of his colleagues calling for visa services to be availed in Eldoret, the self-styled ‘City of Champions’.
Fellow athletes took to social media to mourn the fallen athlete and to console the family of the deceased throughout Tuesday and Wednesday, with Kiplagat perhaps finding the fame that eluded him in life, as tributes poured in.
