Athletics Kenya is expected to select at least 49 athletes to fly the national flag at the 2026 Commonwealth Games set for Glasgow, Scotland next month.
The federation is set to host national championships cum Commonwealth trials come Thursday June 18th to Saturday 20th at the Nyayo National Stadium, the premier national track and field competition and serves as the selection event for the Commonwealth Games team.
With Glasgow action July 23 to August 2, the federation is seeking to pick a formidable team that arose from the Athletics Kenya regions and affiliates.
The championships bring together Kenya’s best athletes from across the country and from all regions to compete for national honours and international team selection.
National Championships The championships will feature the best athletes from across the country and from all regions to compete for national honours and international team selection. representing all 12 Athletics Kenya regions: Nairobi, Central, Central Rift, North Rift, South Rift, Southern, Eastern, Western, Nyanza South, Nyanza North, North Eastern and Coast The event will also include Athletics Kenya affiliates: Kenya Police Service, Kenya Prisons Service, Kenya Defence Forces, Universities, National Youth Service (NYS), Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Kenya Forest Service (KFS), KATTI (Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutes), AK Diaspora (These are Kenyan Student athletes and other training abroad in various countries including U.S, Japan, and Europe) In addition, several international athletes have requested participation, including competitors from Uganda, South Sudan, Lesotho, Zambia , Refugees and other confirming countries, adding an international flavour to the championships.
Senior Vice President Paul Mutwii said the national championships cum trials will bring together athletes from all walks to try their luck.
“We shall have all our athletes coming from the 12 regions, affiliates like Kenya Defence Forces, universities, Prisons, Police, NYS, among others and those in diaspora” said Mutwii.
He insisted that the 49 athletes selected will be based on strict qualification criteria
After selection, the team will be handed over to National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) for final accreditation ahead of the Games
The championships will feature the full range of athletics disciplines including Track events, Field events, Race Walking and Relays.
